The part played by animals in my work

The belief that we are inherently part of the animal kingdom drives my philosophy, as well as informing me as an artist.
"Ask the beast and it will teach thee and the birds of the heaven and they will tell thee"
-- Job 12.7
I try to represent animals without sentimentality but worthy of out respect and care and conscious that we are no more than "poor bare-forked animals" ourselves.

Influences

I have long been fascinated by prehistoric cave paintings and rock art and the medieval bestiary and admire the direct simplicity of style. The monumental, creative energy of Magdalenian Art has yet to be surpassed. It is the Paleolithic qualities of the carborundum print that draws me to this medium and to engrave and paint in sand.
