I offer tuition in several disciplines.

Drawing

General drawing and the sight-sized drawing method. The sight-sized drawing method is the one now taught in the Cecil studio in Florence. It is a very precise technique and was widely used until the early 20th century, producing the naturalistic, almost photo-realism, which we associate with 17th century painting. As a drawing method it encourages absolute accuracy, an accuracy to within a hair's breadth, known as the bed bug line! More importantly, it trains the visual memory in a way that no other method can.

Painting

Both a la prima painting and the traditional indirect painting method, which builds up a painting in a series of well-observed layers. This is the traditional painting method used prior to the Impressionists. I am experienced in the use of gouache, pastels, watercolour and oil paint. I believe that it is possible to teach the rudiments of painting in a single, albeit intensive week.
My courses cover all aspects of colour and encourages a fuller understanding of the palette, as well as linear and aerial perspective, the importance of composition and its relationship with geometry.
Portraiture, still life, life studies and landscape classes are available.

I am a classically trained painter, sculptor and printmaker and have studied and worked with some of the most influential artists and printmakers working today. I like my classes to be serious but also to be playful as well as fun. My style is to be extremely serious about the work, but fairly anarchic about everything else!
I am happy to offer individual tuition or to teach groups. My studio can comfortably hold up to five. I am happy to teach groups of up to twenty elsewhere, or to arrange, organize and tutor painting trips abroad.
Please contact me for prices and further details.
